As Time Goes By

Super boredom usually leads me to one of two things. The one I generally lean toward is going to the kitchen and cooking something up. But since I didn’t feel like being a fatty today I decided to settle on my second option: pondering. And no it’s not “if the plural of mouse is mice, wouldn’t the plural of spouse be spice?” and other fun Pinky and the Brain quotes. It’s more processing what I want to do with my life. Going over what I’ve done and how I want my future to unfold. A sort of defragmentation of my brain if you will; a nice way of keeping myself sane.

One of the main topics of my think session today was what I’m going to do after school. Sure I may have 2 more years to go, but those years turn into months and months turn into days pretty fast. With just a few more GECs before I get into the nitty gritty world of Food Science, the next two years will fly by. So I’ve got to start thinking about my future. My first priority is to get away from my parents. I don’t mean that in the unloving son sort of way. I just don’t want to rely on them like I do now. I’ll always be a momma’s boy. I just want to be self-sufficient. That means getting a nice stable career. No jumping around from hot bar to cafe to restaurant. I’m hoping my 2 degrees will be extremely helpful in that regard. I was told by my advisor that I’d be a great candidate for heading research and development with big food companies thanks to my culinary degree. But I can’t just rely on that alone. Hard work, perseverance, and all that jazz will play a role too.

My second priority is to get out of the country. Not permanently, mind you. Just for a couple years. Now I’m not talking about backpacking through Europe or volunteering in some third-world country. I’m caring and all, but good luck trying to get me away from civilization for an extended period of time. I’m talking about getting a job in a nice, developed country. The good thing about the food industry is that everyone needs to eat, so it won’t be hard to find work. My primary choices would be Spain, Australia, and Japan; Spain for the food, Australia for the beauty, and Japan for being fucking Japan. Hell if possible I’d like to a few years in all three places.

Lastly there’s the fact of settling down and starting a family. But that one is a little bit more personal so I probably won’t delve into that one here. Plus it’s still filled with way too many uncertainties it’s impossible for me to say exactly what’s going to happen. Even the things I’ve said above can be thrown for a loop by some unforeseen events. Still though, it’s nice to have a vague plan of what’s going on.

Hairstyles

Like always got bored during calc today. Instead of falling asleep or taking out my Zune, I decided to look around the room and people watch (creepy, right?) Anyway as I was scanning the room, I saw a cute girl with a ponytail and I thought to myself, “Hey she’s cute.” Then that got me thinking, wait is she really cute? Or did I just label her cute cause she had a ponytail? I hadn’t seen her face yet so why’d I jump to that conclusion. Anyway after some more introspection into my soul, I started thinking about hairstyles. Which ones I like and dislike. Well obviously I like ponytails. But what else. Thinking back on past girlfriends/infatuations/etc. a fairly common recurrence is short hair. Shoulder length hair is okay, but I definitely like chin length (if that’s what it’s called) a helluva lot more. Dislikes? Obviously long hair. I think the longer it gets the more of a turn off it is. Little longer than shoulder is acceptable but down to the small of your back, as Princess Vespa from Spaceballs so eloquently puts it, “it doesn’t do it for me.”

So what’s this all mean? Considering my likes and dislikes, it appears that it all points towards one logical thing. Apparently I like seeing the back of girls necks! It’s what ponytails and short hair have in common and what long hair lacks. So ladies, if you’re trying to woo me, all you have to do is simply expose yourself to me and I’ll be all yours. Expose your neck that is. Not your chest. Well you can do that if you want, I won’t complain.

So yeah. This was originally suppose to be a joke post but as I was writing it, it turned more into an “Omg you’re creepy stay away from me” post. Maybe I should just stay focused during class from now on.

Feivel Goes West

Per usual I found myself randomly browsing the internets late at night. Through some series of links I ended up on the wiki page of “Fievel Goes West” which got me in an extremely nostalgic mood. Went on over to YouTube and watched some of the clips that were on there and was amazed at how much I could recall. Then under related vids I saw a clip of Feivel and Tanya singing “Somewhere Out There” from “An American Tail.” Watched it and the first thing I noticed was it wasn’t as pretty as I remembered (mainly cause of the one high note). But it still brought a big smile to my face. Start watching a few covers of this song then came across this gem.

Honestly I was so moved by it that I got a bit teary. Maybe it’s cause this is how it sounded to me over a decade and a half ago. Maybe it’s all the memories from childhood flooding back to me. Or maybe there’s a part of me missing how simple life was back then. Regardless much love for eVonne for that wonderful experience.

Anyway will try and update more. Most likely will just be short bites like this. Don’t have much time to write long dissertations and such anymore. (more…)

Pump Up the Volume

150909bands

Since arriving here in Ohio I’ve had the pleasure of attending two concerts already. The first band we saw was Sea Wolf with Sara Lov and Port O’Brien opening. I’d say that these bands were right up my alley. They were all pretty much indie folk bands with a fun by very mellow feel to them. The night started with Sara Lov playing a few of her songs. Not being able to bring her band with her, she recorded all their stuff on an LP which she played back during the show. It was actually pretty cool and kinda cute. Overall she had some pretty nice songs. Reminded me a bit of a mellowed out Regina Spektor. Second up was Port O’Brien who I think had the best stage presence of the three. On the other hand they were definitely the most disorganized and ill prepared. Most of their songs weren’t really my style but the last song of theirs was definitely the best of the night. Had some audience participation which involved banging some pots and lids. Tried listening to the same song a few days later, but it was totally different from the live version which bummed me out. The main act, Sea Wolf, was pretty cool. Definite props for having a cute Asian chick playing the piano and cello. In the end though they were a bit too mellow for my tastes. Still had a blast at the concert though.

At the second concert was Pepper with Iration and illScarlet. Now these guys were in a totally different side of the music world that I usually don’t listen to. They’re more or less a mix between reggae, ska, and rock so I pretty much didn’t know what to expect. The night started with Iration and can’t say I really liked them. In the end all their songs sounded pretty much the same. Next up was illScarlet from Canada! Definitely my favorite band of the night. Pretty nice stage presence and their songs were really fun. Could see myself listening to them in the future. And finally Pepper. That is where things got a little wild. They’re definitely great at revving up the crowd cause everyone was going crazy. They’ve also got some awesome stage presence. Was a blast just seeing them up there. Probably wouldn’t see them again, but it was fun for the night. Overall their songs were okay with just one sticking in my head.

So yeah. Hope this is just a glance at things to come. OK Go is going to be in town next month so I’m hoping to check them out. Definitely hoping some of my favorite bands will stop in. That’d definitely make my day. (more…)
