Coraline

020809coraline

First things first. This is not a kid’s movie. Unless your child is the next Damien, they’ll probably have nightmares for a week after seeing Coraline. This movie will send all kinds of shivers down your spine. Maybe it’s compounded by how cutesy the animation and the characters are, but Coraline has creeped me out more than any horror movie in recent history. Saying that, I really liked this movie. All these elements combined with a wonderful “be careful what you wish for” story. Liked it so much I’m afraid to read the source material by Neil Gaiman and, considering his major contributions to comics, that’s saying a lot. There were a few changes when it was transferred from novella to screenplay so I’m afraid it might taint my experiences from the movie. Or, more likely, it’ll be a different piece of awesomeness on its own. Anyway enough of that. Go see this movie! It just recently came out on DVD which should be awesome!

The Soloist Gives a Stellar Performance

The Soloist

Not sure how many of you have heard of The Soloist, but it’s been getting some rave reviews from pretty much every media outlet. So when I went home for the weekend I grabbed at the chance to go see it with my family. Wasn’t really sure what to expect except what I saw in the trailer. It stars Robert Downey Jr. as a writer for the LA Times who encounters a homeless schizophrenic, Jamie Foxx, playing a 2-stringed violin more beautifully than he’s ever heard a fully stringed violin played. So I went into the theater a little excited to find out more.

Needless to say, everyone was right about the movie. It was a wonderful experience that displayed the formation of their relationship, the gainsand sacrifices of their friendship, and what both of them take away from knowing each other. The Soloist is one of those movies that makes you want to slow down and think about your own life and with the school year coming to a close, it couldn’t have come at a better time. As for the performances, they were all stellar. Downey does a spectacular job as always, but the real award goes to Foxx who puts on a superb show. As you can see I highly recommend this movie to everyone out there. It’s a nice way to slow down for the start the summer months. (more…)

Dragonball: Evolution

Dragonball Evolution

So you probably think that this post will be all, “Boo hoo they ruined the franchise! Death to all!” But surprisingly I found Dragonball: Evolution to actually be quite enjoyable. Sure it may not be a completely faithful adaptation or even have some races mixed up, but despite this it didn’t abhor this movie. Now don’t get me wrong. Dragonball won’t be going for any awards and the movie wasn’t without some extremely cheesy parts. But despite this I still think that if you’re a fan of the series you’ll be oddly satisfied. Well unless you’re watching the movie with malicious intent in mind. Then you’ll walk away disappointed regardless. I was expecting horrid results so that may have elevated the movie for me. But if you’re a true fan you’ll still be extremely giddy with this movie. The moment when Bulma entered the movie I was so excited I wanted to let out a fanboy squeal. And there were several other occasions when I had that feeling. So basically what I’m saying, have zero expectations when you see this movie and you’ll have a good ol’ fun time! (PS: Yamcha??) Snakes on a Plane

042009snakes

Snakes on a Plane is probably best known for its horrible plot and horrible acting with its only redeemable quality being Sam Jackson. It’s also known for the famous line, “I’ve had it with these mother fuckin’ snakes on this mother fuckin’ plane!” So when it finally came time for it to air on cable television, some liberties had to be taken with this line… (more…)
